Overview
The HPC and Grid Services team provides distributed compute services to a range of internal technology and business functions. We deliver managed grid services from design and engineering through to operational readiness and support. We are running a Proof of Concept (PoC) to investigate workload management technologies for high-throughput compute.
Purpose of the Role
Deliver a Proof of Concept (PoC) environment for a potential HPC workload management platform, producing a built, tested and documented solution that is ready for onboarding by engineering and application teams.
The preferred technology is HTCondor; however, candidates with strong experience in comparable workload managers/schedulers such as Slurm (or similar enterprise schedulers) will also be considered.
This role combines hands-on platform engineering with delivery ownership: defining requirements, designing the PoC architecture, building/configuring the platform across Windows and Linux, and producing test evidence and onboarding documentation.
Essential experience
Technical
Proven experience designing and delivering HPC/grid/distributed compute or workload scheduling platforms in enterprise environments, including scheduler concepts such as prioritisation, resource controls, accounting and job lifecycle management.Hands-on experience implementing and operating HTCondor (preferred) or demonstrably equivalent experience with alternative schedulers (e.g., Slurm), with the ability to translate that experience into HTCondor-based design decisions.Strong engineering capability across both Linux and Windows server estates (installation, configuration, troubleshooting, performance tuning and operational readiness).Technology stack / tooling expertise (for PoC delivery)
HTCondor platform engineering: experience building, configuring and operating an HTCondor pool (or equivalent scheduler), covering core components and job lifecycle behaviour.Multi-OS deployment: Ability to deploy and run the platform across Microsoft Windows and Linux/Unix-like operating systems.Automation & scripting: Practical scripting capability for repeatable configuration and diagnostics (e.g., Bash/PowerShell; Python beneficial but not required).Version control: Working knowledge of Git-based workflows for traceable changes, peer review and rollback.Additional Beneficial experience (Nice to have)
experience with infrastructure/configuration automation and CI/CD tooling (e.g., Ansible, Terraform, Packer, pipelines).Observability/operational tooling experience (metrics, logging, alerting) to support a production-like PoC.experience working in regulated environments with strong focus on change control, auditability and production readiness.experience designing for scale-out and/or extending compute capacity using cloud or hybrid patterns (where aligned to strategy).experience with existing grid scheduling products and/or grid platform replacement programmes.Role type - Contract
